American
Legion Band
Did
you know the oldest band in the United States is right here in
Sacramento? Jennifer Fischer introduces us to the American Legion
Post 61 Band, the oldest continuously operated legion band in
the country.
Founded in 1920, the band was once dominated by young men. Today
it's a very different scene. Now predominantly senior citizens
of both genders make up this musical group. Jennifer interviews
Norma Woodruff who joined the band after a 60-year absence from
playing the trumpet. Band president Ralph Grace, who's been with
this group since 1962, says although they're marching days are
over; they still have the stamina to play for every patriotic
event and nursing home in town!
The band practice weekly and plays about 40 gigs
a year for local patriotic events, senior retirement communities,
children's homes, and church events. If you're interested in joining
the band, contact Ralph Grace at (916) 332-1308.
